Lesson 3：
文章/ The Essay-
In the Writing Skills Test, you 'll be asked to write a short essay. These words are used to discuss (描述) the writing of essays.

Write done the definition and an example sentence.

body (n.) 文體，主體
The main part of an essay.
- Apart from the body of the book there are three informative appendices(附錄).

conclusion (n.) 總結，結論
The close or last part of something; the end;
the ending of an essay.
- They drew different conclusion from the facts.

details (n.) 詳述，細部
The facts and examples that support a main idea.
- The story has many details about life on schooner(大蓬車).

draft (n.) 草稿
The first verson that you write.
- He had a painfully written out a first draft.

edit (v.) 編輯
To correct misstakes in grammar, sentence structure, and mechanics.
- He spent all morning editing the book.

introduction (n.) 序言，引言，導論
The first part of a book, speech, or musical composition.
The beginning of an essay.
-Some famous people worte introductions for her new book.

outline (n.) 大綱，概要
A description of the main facts or points involved in something. A writing plan.
- These reports give an outline rather than the details.

proofread (v.) 校對，校閱
To read an essay one final time for mistakes.
- We have to proofread the new story again.

purpose (n.) 議題，意圖，目標
The reason for writing about a subject.
- I write a purpose of GED on Blog, let people know what about it.

revise (v.) 修訂，修改
To change something, such as a book or an estimate, in order to correct or improve it.
- He revised his story to make it shorter.

topic (n.) 題目，主題，標題
A subject that you talk, write or learn about.
- We like this topics of books to take about cats.

topic sentence (n.ph.) 主題句，點題句，文章中標明段落主題的句子
A sentence that expresses the main idea of the paragraph in which it occurs.
-Topic sentences are like summarize to take about the book.

The Perfect Essay
The perfect Essay has 5 paragraphs.

I. Introduction (point a,b,c)
                   tell them 3 points you are going to write about.
II. point a
III. point b   (II.,III.,IV. are body) write about it
IV. point c
V. Conclusion  tell them what you arote about...wrap it up!!

It's helpful for you to brainstorm (靈感) your ideas and write them down on scratch paper. There are several methods for doing this. You may use what is easiest for you.

Organization is important. Make sure you indent (縮格) when starting a new paragraph. Read over your essay before you submit it to check for complete sentences. Each sectence must have a subject and a verb!

You will have 45 minutes to complete your essay on the GED.Make sure you have your entire essay on the lined paper that you have to turn in. They will not look at you notes.
