閱讀和思考技巧/ Reading and Thinking Skills-

Having strong reading and thinking skills is important for passing the GED Tests.There are some words that are used to help you think about what you read.

analyze (v.) 分析,解析
To examine in detail, to examine an idea.
- The linguists' main interest has been to analyze and describe languages.

apply(v.)應用,實施
To put into use what you've learned.
- We should apply both theories in the language classroom.

assumption(n.) 假定,假設
An idea or statement accepted as true without proof.
- Let's start with the assumption that all people have equl rights under the law.

cause (n.) 起因,原因
A basis for a certain feeling, action, or decision.
What makes something happen.
- There is no cause for the fire alarm.

compare (v.) 比喻
To examine how ideas are alike and different.
- Shakespeare compared the world to a stage.

contrast (n.) 對比
To examine how things are different from each other.
- It's interesting to contrast the two proposals.

criteria (n.) 標準,準則,原則(批評或做決定的)
A standards by which someting  may be judging or decided.
- What criteria do you use when judging the quaity of a student's work?

effect (n.) 要旨,意義
The result of something happening.
- I said a few words to the effect that all he had told us was already.

evaluate (v.) 評價 [e-val-u-ate]
To form an opinion of the amount, value or quality of something after thinking about it carefully.
- My friend has very high evaluate to
this new writer.

identify (v.) 鑑定
To recognize somebody/ something and be able to say who or what they are.
To name or show proof about something or someone.
- I can't identify this signature.

infer (v.) 推斷,推論
To reach an opinion or decide that something is true on the basis of information that is available.
- infer a condlusion from the facts.

interpret (v.) 詮釋,說明
To explain what something means.
- We have to interpret his words in a modern light.

predict (v.) 預言,預報
To say that something will happen in the future.
- He predicted a good harvest.

restate (v.) 重新敘述,再聲明
To say something again or in a different way, especially so that it's more clearly or strongly expressed.
- He restated his new idea in the meeting.

summarize (v.) 摘要,概述
To tell what happened in a few words.
- She summarized the aims of the new party in a couple of sentences.
